The whole meaning and sense of a text as well as the deeper message contained within it, is communicated through the voice. And the way this is done determines whether or not an audience hears the message and are entertained or moved. This happens when we physically connect to the words through the vowels and consonants, and the personal associations we make with them on an emotional level. We then start to take ownership of them.
A deeper awareness of words changes our relationship to them. When we understand and feel their physical aspects and make personal associations with them, they flow into our body when we take the breath to speak them, and become infused by our imagination and memory.
For actors, this helps to bring a character’s thoughts and words to life. For the rest of us, it can reconnect us with a deeper sense of ourselves as individuals who have things to say which we want to be heard. And when we connect to ourselves at this deeper level, our voice will respond by sounding richer, because it has become an honest reflection of our inner life.
