Voice, Speech & Singing

I am a voice, speech and singing teacher with thirty-five years’ experience, based in Teddington. My goal as a teacher is to help you free your voice so it responds naturally to whatever you happen to be doing – whether it is a song, a presentation or a casual conversation.

To do this, I use a range of sung and spoken exercises, mindfulness practice and Alexander Technique. As someone who stammered, and still does on occasion, I also bring personal insight and empathy to my lessons.

My practice is open to anyone interested in working on their voice for performance, professional clarity or personal development. As well as many actors and singers, my pupils over the years have included clergy, bankers, accountants, lawyers and barristers, psychotherapists, academics and writers, as well as young people preparing for school, university or job interviews. I tend to work with older children these days – from about fourteen years – but please feel free to get in touch if your younger child needs support with an exam, audition or interview. I have particular experience of helping young male singers through their voice change and also prepare pupils for the ABRSM graded singing exams and diplomas.

What can I expect from taking lessons?

During the first lesson we will talk about your voice and why you would like to work on it. Based on our talk, I will be able suggest ways to help you release unnecessary tension, find a relaxed, balanced posture and increase breath capacity, as well as develop resonance, projection, pitch range, flexibility, and clarity.

How long will it take to feel a difference?

The amount of time needed to bring lasting improvements to your voice depends very much on the amount of time you are prepared to practise each day. Small adjustments to posture, especially the balance of the head and neck, as well as a supported breathing pattern, can make a difference very quickly. Articulation can improve within a few weeks, as the muscles and movements involved are very small.

Daily practice brings results sooner, of course. But with a few simple exercises which can easily be practised in as little as ten to fifteen minutes, you can expect to feel a difference within about four to six weeks.
